How to read a live camera during a major event

When an agency reports an earthquake or a storm, TubeTraveler can tell you which public cameras happen to be nearby. What those cameras actually show is a separate question — and one that trips up almost everyone the first time. This guide is about closing that gap.

Start with what “nearby” means

The distance on an event page is the straight-line distance between two coordinates: the point an agency published for the event, and the point we hold for the camera. Nothing more. It says nothing about whether the camera is facing the right way, whether there is a hill in between, or whether the thing being reported is even visible from ground level.

For a fireworks display, 15 km is a plausible viewing distance. For an earthquake, 15 km from the epicentre tells you the camera was shaken — not that shaking is visible on a fixed webcam, which it very often is not. For a wildfire, 15 km could be a wall of smoke or a completely clear sky depending on wind direction. The number is a starting point for judgement, not a conclusion.

What different events actually look like on a camera

Earthquakes

Fixed webcams are usually mounted rigidly, so even a strong quake often produces a brief judder or nothing at all on video. What is more visible afterwards is the human response: traffic stopping, people leaving buildings, streets emptying or filling. If a city camera looks entirely ordinary a few minutes after a magnitude 6, that is not evidence the report was wrong — it is what most earthquake footage looks like.

Tropical cyclones and storms

These are the events cameras handle best, because the effects are atmospheric and large. Watch harbour and beach cameras for sea state, wave height and how boats are moored; watch airport cameras for whether aircraft are still moving. Bear in mind that the reported centre of a cyclone moves, sometimes hundreds of kilometres in a day, so a camera that was directly in the path yesterday may be in clear air today.

Floods

Rivers and low-lying streets change visibly, but a camera 20 km from the reported centre may be in a district that is completely dry. Flooding is intensely local; one flooded underpass and one dry avenue can be a kilometre apart. Never infer city-wide conditions from one frame.

Wildfires

The most useful signal is sky colour and visibility, not flames — flames are rarely in frame. Orange or brown haze, a lowered horizon, or a sun that looks like a red disc all indicate smoke in that direction. Smoke also travels enormous distances, so haze on a camera does not mean the fire is close to it.

Volcanic activity

Mountain and nature cameras can show a plume when the weather cooperates, which is often the limiting factor: cloud cover hides far more eruptions than it reveals. An unremarkable view of a volcano tells you about the cloud, not about the volcano.

Festivals, parades and fireworks

These are the one category where a camera reliably shows the thing itself — but only if it points at the right street, and only during the scheduled window. Crowd density in the hours beforehand is often the better signal that something is about to happen.

Five habits that prevent wrong conclusions

  1. Check the local time before judging the frame. A black rectangle at 03:00 local is a working camera at night, not a failure — and not evidence of a blackout.
  2. Watch for at least a minute. Live streams buffer, drop frames and occasionally hold a still image. Movement somewhere in frame is the quickest confirmation the feed is genuinely live.
  3. Compare two cameras before concluding anything. If two cameras in the same city disagree, the difference is usually local — which is itself information.
  4. Read the agency’s own page. Every event page links its sources. The agency record is authoritative for figures; our page is a summary of it.
  5. Do not read absence as safety. An ordinary-looking street proves that street looked ordinary at that moment. It proves nothing about anywhere else.

What a camera can never tell you

  • Whether anyone was hurt.
  • How much damage there is.
  • Whether an evacuation order or official alert is in force.
  • What is happening one street outside the frame.
  • Whether the event being reported is visible from that camera at all.

For any of those, go to the official agency links on the event page and to your local authorities. If you are in the affected area, act on official instructions — not on a webcam.
